@149st: NYC Cyber Bench

Launched in 1998, @149st NYC Cyber Bench (www.at149st.com) is the Internet’s first website devoted to the history of New York City Subway graffiti.

The site features over 400 pages, a comprehensive outline of graffiti history, hundreds of photographs, dozens of interviews and profiles on prominent crews and artists.

The site name is an homage to an important location in graffiti lore, the infamous 149th Street subway station in The Bronx. During the 1970s and 1980s graffiti writers from all over the city congregated at a bench in the back of the station.  “The Bench” as it was known, was a salon of sorts, where graffiti artists came to meet, make plans, settle disputes and most importantly, observe and critique the hottest new graffiti art as it rolled by on the subway cars.
